Jake’s Story – A Place to Call Home
When Jake arrived at Lee & Beulah Moor Children’s Home, he was just starting middle school. He was often teased by peers for wearing outdated clothing and for sometimes showing up to school without having showered. What they didn’t know was that Jake had been homeless, bouncing from place to place, sometimes even living in his family’s car. At school, Jake struggled with focus and motivation. Teachers labeled him as “lazy,” unaware that his daydreaming and lack of attention were the result of being hungry, exhausted, and constantly worried about where his next meal would come from.
Jake later shared that the highlight of his week was the Sunday lunches at a local Rescue Mission, the only “good” meals he had. His family, too ashamed to seek help, never reached out to teachers, social services, or even local churches. It wasn’t until a family friend intervened that Jake’s life began to change.
Fast forward two years, and Jake is now thriving. His transformation has been remarkable. He credits his success to his “cottage parents,” who “inspire me to be my best.” The team at Lee & Beulah Moor Children’s Home recognized that Jake needed corrective lenses, as he could barely see the chalkboard in class. Once his vision was corrected, combined with regular meals and a nurturing environment, Jake began to flourish.
Meanwhile, the caseworker worked closely with Jake’s mom, helping her secure stable housing and a part-time job. As her confidence grew, so did her relationship with Jake. That part-time job soon turned into a full-time opportunity and Jake and his mom were able to reunite.
Jake’s favorite part of this new chapter? “I have two homes,” he says, “I’ll always have a home here at Lee & Beulah Moor Children’s Home, and also with my mom.” and we couldn’t agree more.
